Remove Calluses and Dead Skin With a Baking Soda Foot Soak
The summertime means more time spent wearing sandals or walking barefoot by the pool. Inevitably, that might also mean that your feet are suffering from things like calluses and dead skin. Luckily, you can take care of it easily at home with a simple baking soda foot soak.
Calluses and dead skin tend to form due to things like lack of moisture and constant friction. Exfoliating and moisturizing the feet is a great way to combat these issues. While you could spend time scrubbing away at them, a much easier method is to use an exfoliating soak.
Baking soda has a variety of uses when it comes to skincare. Some people use it (diluted, of course) as a spot treatment for stubborn acne. It also has mild exfoliating properties, which is what makes it ideal for removing dead skin. Including it in a warm foot bath will also help to soften hard, dry calluses and reduce their appearance over time.
On top of baking soda, we suggest adding some milk to your foot soak. Milk is a natural hydrator for tough, dry skin. It also contains lactic acid which is another mild exfoliator that will help reveal smooth, fresh tootsies.
Take caution when using baking soda on your skin, as it can cause redness and irritation. Always dilute it before using it in your skincare, and perform a test patch of your solution on your skin to check for adverse reactions. The foot bath below shouldn’t be used more than twice per week to prevent irritation. To use baking soda for your feet, here’s what you’ll need to do.
Baking Soda Foot Bath
- Fill a large basin or foot spa with warm water and 1 cup of warm milk.
- Add in 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda and allow it to dissolve.
- Soak your feet in the mixture for 15-20 minutes.
That’s it! Once you’re done with your foot bath, dry your feet with a towel and apply a heavy moisturizer all over them, like Aquaphor Healing Ointment ($13.74, Amazon) for added moisture. This will help soften calluses even more and keep your skin nice and healthy. You can also choose to put socks on your feet once the moisturizer is applied and sleep with them on overnight.
Here’s to beautiful, baby soft skin!
